National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah urged Mt Kenya West leaders to address growing grievances from the eastern region. Speaking in Kerugoya, he warned that ignoring complaints from Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi risks deepening regional divisions.
“If there are people who feel aggrieved, let us listen to them and not dismiss them,” Ichung’wah stated.
Invoking a traditional proverb about fixing small cracks before building walls, he emphasized early conflict resolution. Mount Kenya East leaders frequently cite historical marginalization, unequal resource distribution, and political dominance by western counterparts. They are now demanding autonomous recognition alongside equitable national appointments and development projects.
Ichung’wah reminded attendees that the region historically supported leaders from both zones, including former presidents Jomo Kenyatta, Mwai Kibaki, and Uhuru Kenyatta. He specifically highlighted Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, urging political figures to respect his position.

“Kithure Kindiki, as Deputy President and a child of Meru and Tharaka Nithi, is also a child of Mt Kenya,” Ichung’wah affirmed.
These comments arrive amid intense realignment within Mt Kenya politics, as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
