Undercover detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) executed dramatic sting operations in Kwale and Bungoma counties. These targeted raids led to the immediate arrest of four government officials accused of soliciting bribes.
In Diani, Kwale County, two Kenya Power security personnel allegedly threatened a resident with false arrest over electricity usage. They demanded a Ksh100,000 payoff to squash the non-existent legal charges.
EACC agents from the Lower Coast Regional Office set a trap after receiving the victim’s frantic complaint. Detectives nabbed both utility officers red-handed while accepting a Ksh50,000 down payment.
The suspects were processed at Mombasa Central Police Station and later freed on Ksh20,000 cash bail each. Investigators are currently compiling evidence to support formal court prosecutions.
Simultaneously, a parallel enforcement operation unfolded in Kimilili, Bungoma County. Two county law enforcement officers allegedly targeted a local cyber café operator for operating without a valid permit.
Rather than issuing official citations, the officers threatened to shut down the small business unless paid off. The harassed entrepreneur promptly alerted the anti-corruption authority about the ongoing extortion attempt.
EACC Western Regional Office detectives coordinated an immediate sting, arresting both county enforcement officers during the cash handover. Officers held the duo overnight at Bungoma Police Station pending further legal action.
