Atwoli 1200x675 1
COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has stirred fresh debate in Kenya’s political scene by explaining why voters should re-elect President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election instead of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
The remarks have raised eyebrows because Atwoli was among the most vocal backers of the late ODM leader Raila Odinga during the 2022 presidential race, when Odinga faced Ruto.
According to Atwoli, his change of tone comes from what he has seen up close. He says he has never come across a president as hardworking as Ruto, who he claims barely takes time off from public engagements.

Atwoli says he once visited the President and urged him to rest for at least two days. The President reportedly declined, saying he wanted to keep working on the issues affecting Kenyans.
For the trade unionist, that dedication is what matters most heading into the next election. He has urged Kenyans not to be swayed by Sifuna’s campaign slogans and to back the President’s re-election instead.
The statement is likely to draw mixed reactions. Supporters of the President may see it as an endorsement from an influential labour voice, while Sifuna’s backers may dismiss it as political posturing ahead of 2027. Either way, Atwoli’s words show that the contest for the country’s top seat is already heating up.
As the election approaches, Kenyans will be watching closely to see how alliances shift and which messages resonate with voters.
