Drama in Bungoma as MP Wamboka Confronts Police Over Arrest of “One Term” Chanting Youths
Tension flared in Bungoma County after police officers attempted to arrest a group of youths who were chanting “one term,” prompting an area legislator to step in and confront the officers.
A video circulating online, reportedly recorded in Bumula Constituency, shows police confiscating motorbikes belonging to the youths. The move appears to have angered residents and drawn the attention of Bumula Member of Parliament Jack Wamboka, an ally of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
In the footage, Wamboka rushes to the scene and is seen exchanging heated words with the officers. As the confrontation unfolds, the youths seize the opportunity to take off, escaping the attempted arrest.
The MP accuses the officers of playing politics instead of remaining neutral, as expected of a professional service. He argues that the police should not be taking sides in political matters, especially when the youths were not engaging in any criminal activity.

Wamboka maintains that chanting “one term” is not an offence. According to him, the right to express political views is a freedom enshrined in the Constitution, and no citizen should be harassed, intimidated or arrested for exercising it.
“One term” has become a popular political slogan in some parts of the country, with its supporters using it to express their desire for a change of leadership after a single term in office. The chants have increasingly featured at political rallies, public gatherings and even on the streets, often sparking reactions from both supporters and critics of the government.
The incident has now reignited debate on the role of the police during politically charged moments. Critics argue that officers should not be seen to suppress political expression, while others insist that law enforcers must act whenever public order is threatened.
At the time of publishing, the police had not issued an official statement on the incident or explained why the motorbikes were confiscated. Residents of Bumula are now waiting to see whether the matter will be addressed further by the authorities.
