The political battle ahead of the 2027 elections appears to be taking a new and unexpected turn, with fresh remarks from former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana potentially giving Edwin Sifuna’s camp a reason for optimism.

His remarks come after Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi cautioned that Sifuna could not establish a strong national party just 11 months before Kenyans head to the polls.
In a pointed response, Kibwana appeared to challenge that reasoning by pointing to Kenya’s political history. He noted that KANU and KADU were registered in 1960, with KANU winning the February 1961 election. He also highlighted NARC’s formation in 2002 and its landslide victory in the same year.
Kibwana further cited PNU, which was formed in September 2007 before participating in the December 2007 election under former President Mwai Kibaki.
His message carries significant political weight because the former governor has increasingly been associated with the political direction being championed by Sifuna.
Recent developments have also placed Kibwana at the centre of the contested Mwananchi political identity after his Muungano Party began the process of changing its name to The Mwananchi Party.
For Sifuna, Kibwana’s historical argument could strengthen the case that political movements can grow rapidly when they connect with voters.
With 2027 approaching, the real question now is whether Sifuna can turn growing political attention into a formidable national structure.
