Wanga Draws Heat Online Following Attacks on Overseas-Based Gachagua

NAIROBI, KENYA – Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga has found herself on the receiving end of intense online criticism following her recent scathing remarks targeting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The fiery confrontation broke out while Gachagua was away on a three-week tour of the United States, where his handlers state he is engaging various diaspora communities to build momentum for his 2027 presidential bid.

Speaking during an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) grassroots drive, Governor Wanga reaffirmed that the party would never enter into a political coalition with the former Deputy President.

Wanga portrayed Gachagua as an inherently divisive and tribal figure whose political ideology contrasts sharply with the inclusive national values championed by the late opposition icon Raila Odinga. She insisted that the former DP lacks respect for minority interests and maintains an exclusionary approach to politics.

However, her remarks triggered a swift and hostile backlash across social media platforms, with Kenyans accusing the governor of chasing national political drama at the expense of regional governance.

Netizens ganged up online to fault Wanga, questioning why she chose to attack a politician currently overseas who holds no direct stake in Homa Bay local affairs.

Many urged the county chief to redirect her energy toward fulfilling her election promises, delivering key infrastructure, and improving service delivery for Homa Bay residents. Critics noted that fighting “imaginary national enemies” only serves as a political distraction from local development needs.

As the 2027 realignment heats up, Wanga’s hardline stance underscores the deepening rift between ODM and Gachagua’s camp, even as public pressure mounts on county leaders to prioritize service delivery over early political squabbles.
