President Ruto Signs Major Healthcare Partnership with Italy for 15 New Hospitals
President William Ruto has finalized a health infrastructure agreement with the Government of Italy and the GKSD Group to construct 15 new hospitals across Kenya.
Signed at State House Nairobi, the deal aims to expand medical capacity, address critical shortages of hospital beds, and accelerate the implementation of Universal Health Coverage.
Under the framework of Italy’s Mattei Plan for Africa—a diplomatic and economic initiative designed to foster strategic partnerships across the continent—the project will deliver 13 Level 5 county referral hospitals and two Level 6 national teaching and referral hospitals in 15 counties.
The Level 6 referral facilities are designated for construction in Uasin Gishu and Mombasa counties, while counties such as Mandera, Kilifi, Kisii, Marsabit, Embu, Narok, Baringo, and Turkana are set to receive new Level 5 institutions.
The expansion directly targets Kenya’s current health infrastructure gap. The country maintains a average of 12 hospital beds per 10,000 citizens, falling well short of the World Health Organization standard of 25 beds per 10,000 people.
By decentralizing specialized care, including advanced diagnostics, intensive care, and oncology services, the initiative seeks to ease overcrowding at primary national institutions like Kenyatta National Hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The National Treasury and the Ministry of Health have been tasked with completing the financial, technical, and regulatory requirements alongside Italian officials to ensure project timelines remain on track.
Representatives from the Italian delegation and Kenya’s Ministry of Health highlighted that the new construction projects build upon prior bilateral agreements aimed at improving public welfare through sustained infrastructure investments.
