President Dr William Samoei Arap Ruto is doing everything possible to ensure that he gets the backing of Kenyans and be re-elected in the forthcoming general elections to be held in August next year.

The president left Kenyans talking when he suddenly ordered the closure of Tata Chemicals. He told the company that it can pack and go and promised that there will be new investors. But things have dramatically changed.

President William Ruto has significantly altered his stance regarding the future of the Lake Magadi soda ash operations. The administration announced that the lucrative mining concession will be subjected to an open and competitive public bidding process.

The decision marks a distinct pivot from earlier executive declarations suggesting that specific replacement investors had already been identified to take over the vast mineral site following the exit of Tata Chemicals.

Speaking during a public engagement in Kajiado County, the President revealed that the government intends to split the expansive concession to accommodate multiple operators rather than preserving a single entity’s long-standing monopoly.

The strategic shift comes as the state seeks to restructure how Kenya’s natural resources are commercialized, prioritizing local processing, employment creation, and economic benefit sharing for surrounding communities.
Under the newly announced procurement framework, any international or domestic firm seeking to secure mining rights at Lake Magadi must commit to establishing processing and manufacturing infrastructure directly within Kajiado County.

The government has placed strict prohibitions on the direct export of raw, unrefined soda ash, mandating value addition within national borders to boost industrial production. Additionally, new regulatory limits will cap the maximum acreage leased to any single commercial entity, returning the majority of the land concession to local administration.
The policy reversal addresses growing public scrutiny and legal questions surrounding state procurement transparency and foreign investor management.

By shifting to competitive tendering, the government aims to insulate the transition process from potential legal disputes while attracting established global mining players capable of building local processing facilities. The Ministry of Mining is expected to issue official tender guidelines, setting off a high-stakes competition for one of East Africa’s most significant industrial mineral assets.
