Philanthropist Dan Wema Breaks Silence Over Allegations of Siphoning Patient’s Medical Funds

NAIROBI, Kenya — Renowned Kenyan philanthropist and online personality Pastor Dan Wema has firmly refuted mounting accusations on social media alleging he mismanaged funds raised for a critically ill patient named Phyllis.

Addressing the public following intense scrutiny and backlashes across digital platforms, particularly TikTok, Wema clarified the account of expenditures, detailing that no public donations were misappropriated.

Break Down of the KSh 700,000 Fundraiser

According to Wema, well-wishers and generous Kenyans mobilized approximately KSh 700,000 to fund specialized medical intervention for Phyllis, who suffers from a severe neck swelling.

Setting the record straight on how the finances were utilized, Wema explained that roughly KSh 200,000 was spent on essential medical and logistical needs:

• Logistics & Accommodation: Flight expenses to Eldoret, temporary Airbnb lodgings, transport, and daily meal allowances.
• Medical Expenses: Emergency evaluations and blood transfusions administered at Hope Hospital after initial referral hitches at Kenyatta National Hospital.
• Family Support: Settling three months of rent arrears for Phyllis’s brother, Morris, alongside a cash allocation of KSh 26,000 intended to secure his basic upkeep and subsequent rent.

Wema emphasized that after accounting for these vital disbursements, a balance of KSh 500,000 remained intact.

Institutional Hesitation and Document Delays

Addressing why the remaining funds were not handed over immediately, Wema noted that accountability concerns guided his decision. The patient’s brother reportedly preferred sole signatory rights over a personal bank account, raising risks regarding public oversight and potential loss of accountability.

“I chose to be cautious with the remaining money rather than just sending it without proper accountability. Imagine I send someone KSh 500,000 into a personal account and tomorrow something happens to that money. What would Kenyans ask me?” Wema stated.

Plans to fly Phyllis to India for specialized surgical procedures faced severe hurdles. Indian medical experts advised that the operation carried high risks with uncertain recovery outcomes. Compounded by bureaucratic delays in acquiring necessary travel documents and passports, the team opted for continuous palliative care instead.

Stepping Back Under Online Pressure

The emotional strain escalated following the recent loss of another patient, Erick, who succumbed to a similar condition, leaving Wema apprehensive about pushing for high-risk overseas surgeries. Shortly after, the family requested that Phyllis’s situation be withdrawn from social media platforms.

Concurrently, heavy criticism and accusations surged online. Wema explained that the escalating pressure prompted him to step back temporarily from managing the public narrative, clarifying that taking a step back did not equate to embezzlement.

With news that Phyllis has since been admitted to MP Shah Hospital for specialized management, Wema expressed relief and called for collective goodwill. Urging netizens to cease hostility, he asked for prayers for both the patient’s recovery and the medical personnel handling her care, appealing for compassion over continuous digital feuds.
