Wanga’s remarks have ignited intense debate within ODM ranks and beyond, as the party continues to weigh its options amid growing speculation over coalition negotiations and succession politics ahead of the next General Election.

Speaking during a public event, Wanga praised Joho as a loyal and influential leader who has stood firmly with ODM leader Raila Odinga through thick and thin.

She described Joho as a tested political heavyweight capable of taking up a senior national leadership role if the party enters into a deal where the presidency is held by another coalition partner.

“If Kenya Kwanza or any other formation takes the presidency in 2027, ODM must not settle for less. Hassan Joho is qualified and has what it takes to be Deputy President,” Wanga reportedly said.

Her declaration is expected to stir reactions from within ODM, where several senior leaders are also seen as possible contenders for top slots in any coalition arrangement.

Joho, a charismatic and vocal politician, has remained one of Raila’s closest allies and has been instrumental in ODM’s coastal support base.

Political analysts say Wanga’s endorsement may be part of an early strategy to shape internal party discussions before formal coalition talks begin.

ODM has in recent months been linked to possible alliances with both opposition and government leaning factions, depending on how the political landscape evolves.

The mention of a “2027 deal” has also fueled speculation that ODM may already be exploring scenarios where Raila Odinga may not be on the ballot, forcing the party to negotiate for key positions in a broader coalition government.

Joho’s name has frequently surfaced in national politics due to his strong mobilization skills, youthful appeal, and his ability to command influence in both the Coast region and within ODM’s national structures.

However, Wanga’s endorsement may not go unchallenged. Some party insiders are likely to push for other leaders such as Governor James Orengo, Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, or even Wycliffe Oparanya, depending on the nature of any coalition agreement.

The endorsement also comes at a time when ODM is facing growing internal pressure over its future direction, with factions emerging around succession politics and strategies for 2027.

Neither Joho nor the ODM secretariat has officially responded to Wanga’s remarks, but the statement has already triggered heated conversations across political circles and social media platforms.

As 2027 inches closer, ODM appears to be entering a critical phase where endorsements, alliances and strategic declarations could shape the party’s future and determine its bargaining power in Kenya’s next political realignment.

Wanga’s bold move may have placed Joho firmly in the national spotlight but whether the party rallies behind him or fractures further remains to be seen.
