LINDA Files Formal Objection Against The Equitable Party’s Name Change
NAIROBI, Kenya — The Liberty National Democratic Alliance (LINDA) has lodged a formal objection with the Registrar of Political Parties against The Equitable Party’s (TEP) proposed name change to the Linda Mwananchi Movement.
The legal challenge threatens to derail plans by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to establish the rebranded entity as his presidential vehicle for the 2027 General Election.
The objection, submitted on October 18, 2026, by LINDA Founder and Treasurer Purity Ndanu, argues that proceeding with the rebranding while active disputes remain pending would be premature and legally contested.
LINDA cited two unresolved cases currently awaiting hearing before the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal: Case Number PPDTC/E020/2026 and Case Number PPDTA/E001/2026.
The Equitable Party was officially launched on October 4, 2026, where Senator Sifuna was unveiled as party leader. During the unveiling, Sifuna noted that while the movement intended to rebrand to the Linda Mwananchi Movement, it would retain TEP’s existing identity if further administrative or legal obstacles frustrated the process.

The legal pushback follows an October 13 confirmation from the Registrar of Political Parties, John Lorionokou, stating that his office had reviewed TEP’s supporting documentation and initiated the gazettement process under Section 20(1)(d) of the Political Parties Act.
Adding to the party’s legal hurdles, Chepalungu parliamentary aspirant Ruto Festus submitted a separate query on October 21, 2026, asking the Registrar to verify TEP’s compliance with its own constitution.
Festus questioned whether the rebranding required approval from the National Delegates Conference rather than a resolution passed solely by the National Executive Committee on October 8. He clarified that his petition strictly targets compliance with party procedures rather than the proposed name itself.
