Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah has sparked widespread public debate after taking an unexpected step on social media following sharp criticism from Kenyan youths online.

Ichung’wah, who also serves as the National Assembly Majority Leader, is widely known for his vocal defense of the Kenya Kwanza administration under President William Ruto.

His latest move, however, has drawn mixed reactions after he appeared to engage with a youth-driven civic campaign that quickly turned controversial.

The trend in question, dubbed “Niko Kadi,” has been gaining momentum among young Kenyans. The slogan, popularized organically on social media platforms, is aimed at encouraging eligible citizens—especially the youth—to register as voters and actively participate in shaping the country’s leadership.

In a surprising twist, Ichung’wah shared the “Niko Kadi” slogan on his official social media pages, seemingly aligning himself with the movement.

However, his post did not sit well with a section of Kenyans online, many of whom accused government figures of attempting to co-opt a grassroots initiative for political mileage.

Within hours of posting, Ichung’wah’s comment section was flooded with criticism, with users questioning the sincerity of the government’s involvement in what they view as an independent youth-led effort.

Critics argued that the administration was attempting to rebrand the message to reflect positively on its performance rather than its original intent of civic empowerment.

Amid the backlash, Ichung’wah took the unexpected step of restricting or locking the comment section on his post, effectively limiting further public engagement.

The move has since fueled even more debate, with some interpreting it as an attempt to silence dissent, while others defended it as a necessary measure against online hostility.

The incident highlights the growing influence of digital activism among Kenyan youths and the delicate balance politicians must strike when engaging with grassroots movements in the age of social media.
