Something deeply disturbing has happened and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya says Kenyans can no longer afford to look away. In a strongly worded message, the Trans Nzoia Governor has raised serious questions over the safety of journalists, freedom of expression and the growing fear surrounding criticism of those in power. Natembeya spoke after the reported abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich, who was allegedly seized by armed men along the Gilgil Nakuru road, held for several hours and later found near Masinga Dam.

The governor described the incident as one that should trouble the conscience of every Kenyan. According to Natembeya, the matter goes beyond Kiprotich as an individual because it raises wider concerns about the safety of journalists and the future of media freedom.

He questioned what message such an incident sends to reporters, editors and ordinary citizens who choose to question those in authority.

Natembeya insisted that media freedom and freedom of expression are constitutional rights, arguing that criticism should be answered with facts rather than intimidation or force.

He also invoked President William Ruto’s previous promise that abductions would end, saying Kenyans now deserve to see that commitment demonstrated through action.

The governor called for a transparent and independent investigation into Kiprotich’s alleged abduction. He said authorities must establish who was responsible, why the journalist was targeted and whether anyone authorised or facilitated the incident.
For Natembeya, the issue is bigger than politics. He warned that Kenya risks becoming a country where journalists work in fear and citizens hesitate to speak freely.
