Gachagua Wins Big As Veteran MP Yusuf Hassan Dumps Broad-Based Coalition to Join DCP
NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political outfit, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), has secured a significant political coup after long-serving Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan Abdi formally ditched the Jubilee Party to join the united opposition.
The veteran legislator was officially received into the party by Gachagua alongside senior officials. Gachagua posted a celebratory message across his social media platforms, writing, “Welcome to the party of the moment Yusuf Hassan Abdi Kamukunji member of parliament.”
Hassan, a respected former diplomat and four-term lawmaker, cited the growing public frustration over the high cost of living, governance challenges, and widespread economic hardship as key drivers behind his move to distance himself from the ruling broad-based administration.

“Kenyans are hurting because of the high cost of living, and corruption has increased. Kamukunji residents have said they are tired and cannot bear the burden of bad politics,” Hassan stated during his unveiling.
“Gachagua is a nationalist who loves Kenya, and that is what makes a nation better. The journey has started until we win during the elections and create a new government.”
The high-profile defection marks a major boost for Gachagua’s political momentum as he works to expand the DCP’s footprint outside its traditional Mt. Kenya stronghold and into the capital’s voter-rich constituencies.
Joining in the reception were other Nairobi-area lawmakers, including Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje, Roysambu MP Kamande Mwafrika, and Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru, who voiced unified support for Gachagua’s effort to consolidate the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Hassan’s shift is expected to alter the political calculus in Nairobi, reinforcing the growing realignment of urban political leaders behind Gachagua’s expanding DCP banner.
