Speaking during a political engagement, Gachagua accused the Kenya Kwanza government of mismanaging the economy and frustrating ordinary Kenyans through what he described as poor leadership and unfulfilled promises.
“When Uhuru Kenyatta left, the country was up and running. Ruto has destroyed everything,” Gachagua declared in remarks that are likely to intensify the widening political fallout between the former allies.
The outspoken politician claimed that businesses were struggling, the cost of living had skyrocketed and many Kenyans had lost hope due to economic hardship. He further accused the government of abandoning the promises it made during the 2022 General Election campaign.
Gachagua’s latest criticism adds to the growing political tension between him and President Ruto following their dramatic fallout after years of close political cooperation.
Since leaving office, the former Deputy President has increasingly positioned himself as one of the fiercest critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

His remarks are expected to spark sharp reactions from Ruto’s allies, many of whom have consistently defended the government’s economic policies, arguing that the administration inherited huge debts and a struggling economy from the previous regime.
Supporters of President Ruto maintain that the government is implementing long-term reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy, reducing dependency on borrowing and creating opportunities for young people through sectors such as agriculture, housing and the digital economy.
However, opposition leaders and critics continue to pile pressure on the administration over rising taxes, high fuel prices and the increasing cost of basic commodities.
The latest comments by Gachagua come at a time when political temperatures are already rising ahead of the 2027 General Election, with new alliances and rivalries beginning to shape Kenya’s political landscape.
