President Dr William Samoei Arap Ruto ordered the closure of Tata Chemicals in Magadi. The president said that the company was not employing youths in the country.

But fresh twist has emerged after Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs Ali Hassan Joho revealed why President Ruto’s government is interested saying that mineral deposits in Lake Magadi are vast and require a complete structural overhaul to unlock.

Emphasizing the government’s commitment to maximizing national resources, Joho clarified that the existing regulatory and operational frameworks must adapt to ensure long-term value creation, local community benefits, and economic growth.

The Ministry of Mining has initiated a broader policy shift designed to open up the Lake Magadi mineral corridor to alternative investors.

Joho pointed out that decades of relying on single-entity management failed to fully optimize the natural wealth present in the region, particularly regarding local value addition, employment generation, and infrastructure development.

Consequently, the administration aims to establish a modern framework that encourages competitive participation, strictly enforces regulatory compliance, and diversifies investment across the mining sector.

Under the new government plan, welcoming alternative operators will revitalize the local economy while ensuring that statutory obligations, environmental safeguards, and community development agreements are fully honored.

By opening up the area to fresh capital and expertise, the state intends to expand soda ash production and explore downstream industrial capabilities, including domestic manufacturing initiatives.

The policy direction reflects a wider national strategy to reform Kenya’s extractive industries, moving away from legacy concessions toward transparent, high-impact partnerships.

Joho reassured local stakeholders and potential investors that the transition will be handled systematically, prioritizing equitable wealth distribution, community involvement, and sustained economic development for both Kajiado County and the country at large.
