Embakasi East MP Babu Owino on Monday appeared at the Milimani Law Courts to represent comedian and activist Eric Omondi following his arrest at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on June 5, 2026.
The legislator, who is also a trained lawyer, joined Omondi’s legal team as the comedian sought relief from the court over the circumstances surrounding his arrest and detention.
The case attracted significant public interest, with supporters, activists, and members of the entertainment industry gathering at the court premises to show solidarity with the popular comedian.
Eric Omondi was arrested at JKIA on Friday under circumstances that have sparked widespread debate across the country.
While authorities have yet to provide a detailed public explanation regarding the specific allegations against him, the arrest quickly became a trending topic on social media, prompting demands for transparency and due process.
Speaking outside the courtroom, Babu Owino described the arrest as a matter of public concern and emphasized the importance of protecting constitutional rights.
He stated that every Kenyan, regardless of status or profession, deserves fair treatment under the law and access to justice.
“The Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to a fair hearing and due process. We are here to ensure that justice is served and that the rights of our client are fully protected,” Owino told reporters.
The MP further argued that law enforcement agencies must operate within the confines of the law and avoid actions that may be perceived as intimidation or abuse of power.
He expressed confidence that the court would objectively examine the facts surrounding the case.
Omondi, known for his outspoken activism on social and economic issues, has in recent years positioned himself as a vocal advocate for ordinary Kenyans.
