DCP Declines Joining Ukombozi Alliance, Eyes Separate Pre-Election Deal With Sifuna Faction
The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has formally ruled out joining the newly rebranded Ukombozi Alliance (TUA) in its current setup.
Instead, the party plans to forge a separate alliance with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s faction and the Linda Mwananchi Movement before negotiating for a broader opposition coalition.
Speaking during a public engagement on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala clarified the party’s strategic stance ahead of the 2027 General Elections. Malala stated that DCP intends to consolidate its political working arrangements first rather than directly subsuming itself into TUA.
“We as DCP cannot join the Ukombozi Alliance directly. They should unite as TUA, while we in the DCP will team up with Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi Movement,” Malala explained. “We will sit down and negotiate together for one single umbrella coalition after they have aligned as TUA.”

The announcement comes just two days after the main opposition outfit, previously known as Azimio La Umoja, rebranded to the Ukombozi Alliance under the leadership of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
TUA leadership had hinted that the updated coalition structure would naturally incorporate incoming groups, including DCP. However, Malala’s remarks effectively place DCP outside TUA’s current framework for now.
While Senator Sifuna’s faction has yet to officially respond to DCP’s proposal, opposition figures maintain that fielding a single joint presidential candidate remains the most viable path to defeating President William Ruto on the first round of voting in 2027. This latest political maneuver underlines the intensifying realignments taking shape across Kenya’s political landscape.
