DCI Warns Against Unverified Posts Following Viral Expressway Robbery Claims

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has urged the public to exercise caution and avoid sharing unverified information online after a video claiming to show a daylight robbery on the Nairobi Expressway went viral, triggering public outrage.

The widely circulated footage showed a group of individuals gathered around vehicles on the toll highway, leading social media users to allege that motorists were being robbed on the heavily monitored corridor. The reports raised immediate security concerns among commuters who rely on the expressway’s surveillance infrastructure.

However, preliminary findings by detectives from the Kilimani DCI office have cleared up the incident, confirming it was not a robbery. Police identified and summoned all individuals captured in the video, including Kasarani Member of Parliament Ronald Karauri, to record official statements.

“The persons depicted in the clip, including the alleged victim, have been identified, summoned, and their statements recorded. Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident was not a robbery,” the DCI stated in an official update.

The agency’s findings align with a prior statement from the Moja Expressway Company, which operates the toll road.

The operator clarified that the footage merely captured a politician’s delegation making a brief stop to swap vehicles. Further police searches across Nairobi stations confirmed that no robbery reports had been filed regarding the incident.

Addressing the online panic, the DCI urged citizens to desist from forwarding unconfirmed reports that fuel unnecessary alarm. Instead, members of the public possessive of actionable information that could assist in ongoing inquiries are encouraged to report to their nearest police station. Detectives are continuing investigations to document all facts surrounding the incident and the subsequent spread of the misleading video.
