KISII, Kenya: Prominent lawyer Danstan Omari has called on Jubilee Party leader Dr. Fred Matiang’i to shelve his 2027 presidential ambitions and support President William Ruto in the next General Election.

Speaking to journalists in Kisii town, Omari clarified that he was not asking the former Interior Cabinet Secretary to quit politics, but to reconsider his presidential run and back the incumbent. He argued the move would benefit the Gusii community.

Omari said Matiang’i, as a son of the soil, should prioritise the interests of the Omogusii people while other communities benefit from government development projects. He cautioned that projects earmarked for the region could be diverted elsewhere if local leaders fail to align with the current political establishment.

On voter numbers, Omari dismissed claims that the Gusii bloc could independently decide the presidential outcome, noting that the region holds a relatively small share of registered voters nationally.

He also defended the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), describing it as a national party with a presence across the country.

Responding to critics who have branded him a betrayer of the community, Omari said Matiang’i was steadily losing political allies. He cited Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, who has joined the Linda Mwananchi Movement as treasurer under party leader Edwin Sifuna.

He also pointed out that Matiang’i and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro were absent from the movement’s launch, which other political principals reportedly attended. Omari interpreted this as a sign that the two were not part of consultations on the movement’s presidential plans.

Omari further noted that Matiang’i had not joined the delegations visiting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence.

He said these developments should push Matiang’i to rethink his strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election.
