China Gives Kenya KSh260 Million Grant for Drought and Ebola Preparedness

Kenya has received a KSh260 million grant from China to support drought mitigation and strengthen preparedness for potential Ebola outbreaks.

The grant was officially handed over at the National Treasury during a meeting between Principal Secretary for the National Treasury Dr Chris Kiptoo and Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan.

According to Kiptoo, the funding amounts to USD2 million, equivalent to approximately KSh259.88 million based on an exchange rate of KSh129.94 per dollar.

The grant will be divided equally between drought mitigation and Ebola preparedness.

About KSh130 million will support government efforts to address the effects of drought across the country. The remaining KSh130 million will strengthen Kenya’s capacity to prepare for and respond to possible Ebola outbreaks.

Kiptoo thanked the Chinese government for its continued support of Kenya’s development programmes.

He said the latest funding demonstrates the strong cooperation between Kenya and China in addressing key development and humanitarian priorities.

The Treasury PS also briefed Ambassador Guo on his recent official visit to China and discussed follow-up engagements on projects agreed upon by the two countries.

China remains one of Kenya’s major development partners, with its support extending to infrastructure, healthcare and socioeconomic programmes.

The latest grant comes as Kenya intensifies preparations against a possible Ebola outbreak.

The government has established a preliminary Ebola response mitigation fund of KSh2.6 billion through the National Treasury to support surveillance, preparedness and emergency response.

Kenya is also expecting additional financial support from international partners as it strengthens its response systems.

The government has outlined plans to improve disease surveillance, enhance early detection, train community health workers and procure essential medical supplies.

The KSh260 million Chinese grant is therefore expected to complement existing government and international efforts while addressing two major concerns facing Kenya: drought and public health preparedness.
