Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has officially declared her candidacy for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the upcoming 2027 General Election.
Addressing her congregation during a Sunday service at Jesus Is Alive Ministries, the former Starehe Member of Parliament confirmed that she will seek the county’s top job under a party that she will soon disclose.
Bishop Wanjiru noted that her decision followed extensive consultations with her supporters, political allies, and key stakeholders.
She explained that these groups had urged her to provide clear direction on her next political move after months of speculation surrounding her strategy ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Framing her campaign around the slogan “Nairobi Mpya,” the veteran politician stressed that her decision to run is driven by a commitment to public service rather than personal ambition.
“My bid for the Nairobi governor’s seat is a call to serve and a commitment to restore dignity, order, accountability, and opportunities to the people of Nairobi,” she said. She emphasized that the capital city requires leadership capable of managing its vast resources prudently while addressing persistent challenges in urban service delivery.
Wanjiru outlined priority areas for her administration, including combating corruption within county administration, improving sanitation, expanding reliable water supply networks, upgrading infrastructure, and boosting local healthcare services.
Her entry significantly reshapes the political landscape for the Nairobi gubernatorial race.
Wanjiru previously stepped down from the 2022 governor’s race within the Kenya Kwanza coalition framework to support incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja.
With her renewed bid on an independent party platform, she sets up a high-stakes contest against both the incumbent administration and other prominent figures seeking to lead Kenya’s capital.
