Atwoli Warns Sifuna Against 2027 Presidential Bid
Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has intensified his criticism of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s emerging 2027 presidential ambitions, warning that political figures encouraging the politician to enter the race could eventually abandon him.
Speaking in Khwisero, Kakamega County, during an event organized by local MP Christopher Aseka, Atwoli argued that the former ODM leader is rushing his entry into the presidential contest. He cautioned Sifuna to concentrate on building a stronger political foundation rather than pursuing high-stakes national ambitions prematurely.
Atwoli claimed that those pushing Sifuna to run do not have his best interests at heart. “Those telling a young man like Sifuna to run for president are misleading him. They will leave him out in the cold, just as they did to Raila Odinga in 2022,” Atwoli stated, adding that Sifuna should seek established endorsements before aggressively mobilizing campaign resources.

The COTU boss also directed sharp criticism at former President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing him of using Sifuna’s campaign to divide the Western Kenya voting bloc ahead of the 2027 General Election. Uhuru has previously denied active political involvement or sponsoring candidates.
Sifuna, who leads the Linda Mwananchi movement after parting ways with ODM leadership, has maintained that his political journey remains open to a presidential bid if driven by ordinary citizens rather than elite financiers.
He previously rejected Atwoli’s offer to help raise campaign funds, insisting he would rather rely on small contributions from millions of everyday voters.
