The president has repeatedly emphasized the importance of unity, even telling leaders of the broad-based administration that winning the 2027 election should be their priority.
Yet beneath the public displays of cooperation, political tensions appear to be deepening.
The most worrying development for Ruto could be divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement.
Different factions have openly disagreed over the party’s relationship with the administration, with some leaders supporting continued cooperation while others have questioned the direction being taken.
These disagreements could have serious consequences for Ruto’s re-election ambitions. A coalition built around political personalities and competing interests can easily collapse when individual leaders begin calculating their own electoral futures.
The situation becomes even more significant because the broad-based government depends heavily on maintaining cooperation between the ruling United Democratic Alliance and its partners.
Reports of declining public support and deepening divisions within the alliance could make that task increasingly difficult.
