President Dr William Samoei Arap Ruto has found himself in a tight corner after seemingly making the biggest ever blunder in the country.
This comes after the president and his Kenya Kwanza Alliance Government decided to take the following unexcusable move that left Kenyans bitter with months to the forthcoming general elections to be held in August next year.
Political analyst Odhiambo Ramogi has sharply criticized President William Ruto following his directive ordering a crackdown on foreign nationals operating small-scale businesses and hawking across Kenya.
In a strong rebuke of the state’s stance, Ramogi characterized the executive declaration as irresponsible, careless, and self-seeking policy platforming that prioritizes short-term political posturing over sound economic strategy.
According to Ramogi, the administration’s sudden hardline stance threatens to severely disrupt cross-border economic stability.
He argued that there are significantly better diplomatic approaches to resolving trade friction, regulating retail markets, and addressing local economic grievances than resorting to executive mandates that risk alienating key trade partners.
Broad retaliatory trade practices, he noted, could backfire heavily on Kenya’s macroeconomic standing.
Highlighting regional economic interdependence, Ramogi emphasized that Kenya benefits far more from East African nations than these neighboring states gain in return.
Domestic exporters, manufacturers, and cross-border traders rely heavily on regional markets, leaving Kenya particularly vulnerable should neighboring governments retaliate with similar restrictions on Kenyan businesses operating abroad.
Warning against the long-term diplomatic fallout, Ramogi stressed that Kenya stands to lose immensely if forced down the dangerous, xenophobic path currently being carved by the executive.
Aggressive rhetoric against foreign micro-entrepreneurs harms regional integration under the East African Community framework, damages foreign investor confidence, and jeopardizes Kenya’s standing as a stable regional economic hub.
Instead of stirring division, he urged the state to pursue measured, structured policy negotiations that safeguard local livelihoods without burning critical diplomatic bridges.
