The ambitious agricultural support programme spearheaded by Governor Kimani Wamatangi is aimed at lowering production costs for small scale farmers while increasing household incomes through improved crop yields and promotion of high value farming.
County officials said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to revive agriculture and cushion farmers from the rising cost of farm inputs that has affected productivity in recent years.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, Wamatangi said the county administration is committed to empowering farmers and ensuring every household has access to food and sustainable income opportunities.
He noted that agriculture remains the backbone of Kiambu’s economy and that supporting farmers directly would help the county tackle food insecurity while creating wealth in rural communities.
“Our goal is to make farming profitable again by reducing the burden on farmers. By providing certified seeds and fertilizer, we are helping them increase yields, while avocado farming opens opportunities for export earnings and long-term income,” Wamatangi said.
The county government revealed that thousands of avocado seedlings have already been distributed in various sub-counties, with farmers encouraged to embrace the crop due to its growing demand in international markets.

Agriculture experts involved in the programme said certified maize seeds are expected to improve harvests significantly compared to ordinary seeds, while the fertilizer support will help farmers maintain soil fertility and reduce production challenges.
Farmers who benefited from the exercise welcomed the move, saying the free inputs would help them prepare for the planting season without incurring huge expenses.
Many described the programme as timely, especially amid the rising cost of living and unpredictable weather conditions that have strained farming activities in many parts of the country.
Some residents also praised the county government for focusing on both food crops and cash crops, arguing that the combination would improve food availability while also boosting household incomes.
Kiambu County has increasingly positioned itself as a leader in agricultural transformation through investment in modern farming methods, extension services and market linkages for farmers.
County officials expressed optimism that the programme will lead to increased maize production and greater adoption of avocado farming, ultimately improving livelihoods and strengthening food security for thousands of families.
The county government has also urged farmers to fully utilize the inputs and adopt modern farming practices to maximize productivity during the current planting season.
