Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has issued a stirring call for national unity, warning that Kenya stands at a defining crossroads that demands collective responsibility, honest leadership and courage from its citizens.
Matiang’i said the country can no longer afford division, complacency or silence in the face of growing challenges.
The time has come to confront the state of our country,” Matiang’i said, framing unity not as a political slogan but as a moral duty owed to both history and future generations.
Matiang’i, who served in some of the most powerful dockets in the previous administration, argued that Kenya’s problems cannot be solved through factional politics or short term interests.
Instead, he called for a renewed sense of shared purpose that rises above ethnicity, party affiliations and personal ambition.
According to Matiang’i, unity is no longer optional but an obligation that must guide national decision making.
He warned that continued divisions risk weakening institutions, eroding public trust and mortgaging the country’s future.
His message appeared to be directed not only at political leaders but also at ordinary citizens, urging them to actively defend democratic values and demand better governance.

Political analysts view Matiang’i’s remarks as significant, coming amid speculation about his future role in national politics.
While he stopped short of declaring any political ambitions, the tone of his message suggested a statesman positioning himself as a voice of reason and reform at a time of uncertainty.
Civil society groups and youth leaders have welcomed the call for unity, saying it reflects the growing desire among Kenyans for inclusive leadership and honest conversations about the country’s direction.
Others, however, have challenged leaders from past administrations to go beyond rhetoric and acknowledge their own role in the country’s current struggles.
As debates continue, Matiang’i’s words have injected fresh energy into the national discourse.
Whether his call translates into concrete action or political realignment remains to be seen, but his message has struck a chord.
Kenya’s future, he insists, depends on unity forged through responsibility, accountability and a shared commitment to the common good.
