SIAYA — A recent public event in Siaya County has sparked widespread debate among Kenyans after Governor James Orengo made unexpected remarks in the presence of President William Ruto.

The Head of State is currently touring the region to launch and commission a series of development projects aimed at boosting infrastructure and economic growth.

He was accompanied by several leaders, including Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, among other government officials.

Governor Orengo, who has in the past been a vocal critic of President Ruto and has previously urged Kenyans to consider limiting him to a single term, appeared to strike a markedly different tone during the event.

In a video that has since gone viral, President Ruto invited Orengo to address the crowd — a moment many expected would reignite political rhetoric.

However, contrary to expectations, Orengo avoided any mention of the “one-term” narrative that has often defined his criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Instead, he welcomed the President to Siaya, emphasizing that the people of the county are open and ready to receive the Head of State whenever he visits.

“The people of Siaya are ready and willing to welcome the President anytime,” Orengo stated, focusing his remarks on unity and development rather than political contestation.

President Ruto, in his response, downplayed the political undertones, asserting that leadership terms would ultimately be determined by the electorate. He stressed that his administration’s priority remains delivering tangible development to Kenyans.

“It is the people who will decide whether it is one term or two terms. What matters now is service delivery and development,” Ruto said.

The exchange has left many Kenyans speculating about Orengo’s shift in tone, with some interpreting it as a sign of political pragmatism, while others questioned why the governor chose not to directly challenge the President as he has done in the past.

The incident continues to generate reactions online, with analysts suggesting it reflects the evolving dynamics in Kenya’s political landscape.
