NANDI, KENYA — President William Ruto faces mounting pressure within his political stronghold as construction workers at the government’s flagship Affordable Housing site in Chesumei, Nandi County, staged protests over unpaid wages.

In videos widely shared online, dozens of frustrated laborers downed their tools and blocked local transport routes, bringing operations at the Chesumei construction site to a standstill. Demonstrators voiced deep dissatisfaction, alleging that contractors have failed to disburse their salaries for multiple months despite repeated promises.

The striking workers, comprising local youth and artisans hired to build low-cost units, urged President Ruto directly to intervene. They emphasized that delayed payments have made it impossible to meet basic household expenses such as food, rent, and school fees.

New Demands Issued by the Demonstrators:

• Immediate Salary Clearance: Full disbursement of all accrued arrears owed to laborers and subcontractors.
• Direct Executive Intervention: Swift action from the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development to audit site management.
• Standardized Payment Schedules: Guarantees for direct, timely wage distributions moving forward to avoid exploitation.

The labor unrest in Nandi presents a delicate political challenge for the President. With the Affordable Housing Programme positioned as a centerpiece of the administration’s economic blueprint, disruptions in his political heartland could risk eroding local public approval as political dynamics shift toward the 2027 General Election.
