Sifuna Suffers Setback in Western as Vihiga ODM Boss Backs Ruto for 2027
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s presidential ambitions have run into early turbulence in his Western region backyard after a senior Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) official declared that the lawmaker lacks a viable path to the presidency in 2027.
Speaking on the political realities facing Sifuna—who is increasingly tipped to challenge President William Ruto under a consolidated opposition umbrella—Vihiga County ODM Chairperson Victor Ombimba dealt a major blow to the former Secretary-General’s political prospects.
Ombimba asserted that Sifuna will not succeed in his bid to unseat President Ruto, pointing to the stringent constitutional thresholds required to win the top seat.

Under the Kenyan Constitution, a winning presidential candidate must secure more than 50% of the total votes cast nationwide and at least 25% of the votes in each of at least 24 counties.
According to the local party boss, achieving that level of national spread will prove an uphill task for Sifuna and the political forces pushing his candidature.
“Winning the presidency is not just about regional popularity; it requires a vast national network to clear the 25% threshold in a majority of the counties,” Ombimba noted, arguing that Sifuna’s current coalition dynamics fall short of that mandate.
Dismissing the opposition’s strategy in the region, Ombimba insisted that Vihiga County and the broader Western region stand to benefit more by aligning directly with the government of the day. He affirmed that local leaders will back President Ruto’s re-election bid to ensure continuous infrastructure development and regional political inclusion.
The sharp pushback from within ODM highlights the deepening factional divides in Western Kenya as local politicians weigh loyalty to party figures against the political benefits of cooperating with the state ahead of 2027.
