Kenya has taken another significant step in modernizing its law enforcement and forensic investigation capabilities following the handover of the prestigious ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) Certificate to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ Forensic Evidence Management Unit (FEMU).
The ceremony, held at the DCI Headquarters, also marked the official launch of the Multi-Biometric Identification System (MBIS – ABIS Version 5), a cutting edge technology expected to transform criminal investigations across the country.
The event underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening forensic science, embracing digital policing, and enhancing the capacity of security agencies to investigate crimes using internationally recognized standards.
The ANAB accreditation is a globally respected certification that recognizes laboratories and forensic institutions for meeting strict international quality management and technical competence requirements.
Receiving the certification places Kenya’s forensic evidence management systems among internationally recognized institutions, boosting confidence in the country’s criminal justice process.
Speaking during the ceremony, leaders emphasized that the accreditation reflects years of investment in training personnel, improving forensic infrastructure, and ensuring that evidence collected during investigations meets global standards for reliability and admissibility in court.
The launch of the Multi-Biometric Identification System (MBIS – ABIS Version 5) is expected to further strengthen the DCI’s investigative capabilities.
The advanced platform integrates multiple biometric identifiers, including fingerprints and other unique human characteristics, enabling investigators to identify suspects more accurately and efficiently.
Officials noted that the new system will enhance criminal identification, speed up investigations, reduce identity fraud, and improve collaboration among security agencies.
It is also expected to support efforts in combating organized crime, terrorism, cybercrime, and other complex criminal activities.
