Tactical Mastermind Libobdo Shimenga Returns to Kenyan School Rugby with Friends School Kamusinga

KIMILILI, Kenya — In a major boost for the Western region’s secondary school sports landscape, legendary rugby coach Libobdo Shimenga has officially returned to Kenya and joined Friends School Kamusinga (FSK). His appointment marks a sensational comeback to the local school rugby circuit after nearly three years honing his craft in the United Kingdom.

Shimenga, widely regarded as one of the finest tacticians in grassroots Kenyan rugby, departed Butula Boys High School in December 2023. During his tenure in the UK, he pursued a Master’s degree while simultaneously taking up coaching responsibilities with young players, absorbing modern European training methodologies, high-performance sports analytics, and player development systems.

His arrival at Friends School Kamusinga—a national powerhouse located in Kimilili, Bungoma County—signals a bold new era for the team’s rugby program. Rather than focusing solely on traditional tactical play, Shimenga brings a global outlook aimed at transforming how schoolboys approach the game.

Speaking directly to sports news outlet Two5four, Shimenga revealed that his immediate mandate goes beyond victories on the local pitch, placing international player exposure at the core of his vision.

“My primary target at FSK is to facilitate an exchange programme with some schools in the UK, expose our kids to international programmes, and give them a different perspective of the game,” Shimenga told Two5four.

Through these proposed exchange initiatives, Shimenga aims to bridge the gap between Kenyan high school rugby and international development pathways. Young talent at FSK will have unprecedented opportunities to experience overseas rugby culture, undergo cross-border training sessions, and build potential athletic routes abroad.

However, international exposure is only one half of the equation. Back home, the veteran coach has set his sights firmly on restore-and-conquer duty. Known for building disciplined, physical, and tactical sides capable of unraveling stubborn defenses, Shimenga is aiming for the highest domestic and regional honors: the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national championship and the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Associations (FEASSSA) titles.

With the school rugby season gathering momentum, rival institutions across the Western region and nationwide will certainly take notice of Kamusinga’s high-profile acquisition. Shimenga’s proven track record of developing elite talent and engineering title-winning campaigns makes FSK an instant threat in upcoming tournaments.

For Kamusinga fans, players, and the wider local rugby fraternity, the message is loud and clear: a master tactician has returned to rewrite the playbook.
