SGB and VIP Protection Commandant Lazarus Opicho Passes Away in Nairobi

NAIROBI, KENYA — Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police Lazarus Opicho, the Commandant of the Security of Government Buildings (SGB) and VIP Protection Unit, has passed away. Opicho died on Monday night while undergoing treatment at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi following a short illness.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja led the National Police Service (NPS) and the security sector in mourning the fallen senior officer, praising him as a dedicated, honest, and exemplary leader whose service will be deeply missed across the nation’s security agencies.

Political leaders, including Bumula Member of Parliament Jack Wanami Wamboka, also paid tribute, hailing Opicho for his professionalism, friendship, and steadfast commitment to public safety.

Lazarus Opicho was a veteran police commander within the Administration Police Service (APS) who rose through the ranks to the position of Senior Assistant Inspector General. Over his career, he held several strategic security roles, serving as a key figure in safeguarding vital state institutions and national leaders.

• Pioneer Commandant of the Judiciary Police Unit: Before heading the SGB and VIP Protection Unit, Opicho served as the pioneer commandant tasked with establishing and overseeing security protocols for court stations, judges, and judicial staff nationwide.
• VIP Protection & SGB Leadership: As Commandant of the SGB and VIP Protection Unit, he was responsible for managing security details assigned to key state institutions, government officials, VIPs, and high-ranking dignitaries.
• 2024 Judicial Security Incident: In September 2024, Opicho made national headlines when he appeared before the High Court following an incident involving inquiries into High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi’s security details. He clarified that his actions were aimed solely at assessing judicial security following the shooting of a magistrate at Makadara Law Courts, reaffirming his dedication to maintaining law, order, and judicial independence.
