Following decades of natural resource extraction, those living in Kajiado County contend that the long-standing corporate model failed to generate meaningful local prosperity, leaving the area in need of a completely new economic framework for years.
The executive order follows mounting disputes over regulatory compliance, land rights, and the lack of value addition to Kenya’s mineral wealth. For over a century, operations at the lake focused primarily on extracting raw trona and exporting raw soda ash abroad.
Local communities argue that this dynamic created an enclave economy, leaving surrounding towns with minimal industrial development, limited job growth, and inadequate infrastructure.
