Ruto Accuses Uhuru Kenyatta of Sponsoring Senator Sifuna and Opposition Leaders

NAIROBI, Kenya — August 13, 2026 — President William Ruto has publicly called out former President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing his predecessor of secretly sponsoring and bankrolling key opposition politicians, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

Speaking to supporters during an official address, President Ruto targeted Uhuru for allegedly funding anti-government activities to destabilize the Kenya Kwanza administration ahead of the 2027 General Election.

According to the Head of State, the former president is the political patron behind the growing “United Opposition” coalition and the “Linda Mwananchi” movement, which Sifuna and other prominent figures have actively championed across the country.

Ruto argued that the opposition lacks a constructive developmental agenda and relies on heavy financial patronage from retired leadership to spread public discontent and political division.

He reiterated that his administration remains focused on delivering key economic programs, including agricultural reforms and housing projects, despite calculated political interference.

The accusations mark a sharp escalation in the rift between the current and former heads of state.

In response to similar claims from ruling coalition allies in recent weeks, Senator Sifuna dismissed the administration’s narratives as political panic triggered by rising public frustration with Kenya Kwanza policies.

Sifuna maintained that the opposition’s movement is driven by citizen empowerment and constitutional accountability rather than corporate or political sponsorship.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has yet to issue an official statement addressing the latest allegations.

However, political analysts view the public clash as a sign that the battle lines for 2027 are being drawn early, as the ruling alliance continuously frames the opposition as a proxy vehicle for former regime figures.
