Tragedy Strikes Besigye Family as Dr. Kizza Besigye’s Only Grandson Passes Away

KAMPALA — The family of prominent Ugandan opposition leader, Rt. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye, has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of his only grandson, Righteous Ariho (affectionately known as Rai).

The heartbreaking news was announced by the child’s father, Adam Ampa Besigye, in a emotional social media tribute. Six-year-old Ariho passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Mulago Hospital in Kampala.

In his moving statement, Adam expressed the immense grief of losing his firstborn son.

“It’s with profound pain and a heavy heart I’ve never imagined I would ever carry, that I announce the loss of my beloved and only firstborn son, Righteous Ariho (Rai),” Adam wrote. “Rai, the only grandson of my father, Rt. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye, fell asleep in the early hours of Thursday at ICU of Mulago Hospital.”

Born in March 2020 during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ariho was described by his father as an “eternal gift from God” and a brave “warrior” who fought valiantly until his final moments.

Bidding a tearful farewell, Adam shared biblical comfort from Psalm 34:18—“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit”—before declaring that his son has now become his guardian angel.

The tragedy comes during a difficult period for the family, as Dr. Kizza Besigye remains in detention. Messages of condolence and support have poured in from across the nation as well-wishers stand with the family in prayer during this solemn time.
