Tanzania’s Vice President Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi has announced his resignation from office and complete retirement from active politics and public service, bringing an end to a political career spanning over three decades.
In a formal statement issued from the Office of the Vice President in Dodoma on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, Dr. Nchimbi confirmed he had tendered his resignation letter to President Samia Suluhu Hassan. He stated that his resignation will officially take effect on September 4, 2026.
Dr. Nchimbi cited constitutional provisions under Article 50(2)(c), read alongside Article 149(2) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, as the legal foundation for his departure.
He explained that his decision was guided by a commitment made to the Head of State on August 27, 2025, where he promised to serve faithfully and step aside whenever the leadership desired a change.

He expressed complete confidence that President Samia desired a new direction for the administration, prompting him to honor his pledge.
Expressing his appreciation, Dr. Nchimbi thanked President Samia and the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party for their trust, while reassuring Tanzanians that he would remain a devoted, patriotic citizen.
Dr. Nchimbi’s long political career began in the late 1990s through the CCM youth wing, UVCCM. He later served as Bunda District Commissioner, Songea Urban Member of Parliament, and held several deputy and full ministerial portfolios—including Defense, Information, and Home Affairs—under former President Jakaya Kikwete.
He also represented Tanzania as ambassador to Brazil and Egypt before assuming the post of CCM Secretary-General in early 2024 and subsequently stepping into the vice presidency. His exit opens the door for President Samia to select a new deputy.
