The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) has strongly condemned the filming and circulation of a video showing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua while taking medication at a pharmacy in Kisii County, terming the incident a serious breach of patient privacy and healthcare confidentiality.
In an official statement dated February 25, 2026, PSK said it had taken note of the widely circulated footage that sparked public debate and complaints from Kenyans over the violation of Gachagua’s privacy.
The society emphasized that pharmacies are healthcare environments and that recording any client within such a setting without consent is unethical and unacceptable.
“Recording any client within a pharmacy setting without consent constitutes a serious breach of privacy and healthcare confidentiality,” the statement read.
PSK reiterated that confidentiality in healthcare is not optional but a fundamental ethical and professional obligation that applies to all individuals regardless of their public status.
The pharmacists’ body clarified that it represents pharmacists, who undergo advanced university training in pharmacology, therapeutics, clinical decision-making, and patient safety.
Upon qualification, pharmacists take a professional oath committing to uphold confidentiality, integrity, and patient welfare at all times.
PSK further noted that both pharmacists and pharmaceutical technologists are regulated practitioners under Kenyan law.
While it remains unclear which licensed professionals were present at the pharmacy in question, the society said it is undertaking due diligence to verify the outlet’s licensing status and the identities of those involved, adding that appropriate regulatory action will be taken if violations are confirmed.
The society expressed regret over the apparent breach of privacy, stressing that every Kenyan has a right to confidential healthcare.
PSK also underscored the importance of pharmacy outlets operating under qualified supervision to safeguard patient confidentiality, maintain public trust, and preserve the integrity of the healthcare system.
The statement was signed by PSK President Dr. Wairimu Mbogo, with a copy forwarded to the Pharmacy and Poisons Board for further attention.
