Speaking in Nyakach, Kisumu County, Orengo accused the government of using public power to influence economic opportunities and political loyalties.
He argued that Kenya’s greatest danger is not simply poor governance, but the alleged attempt to gain control of the country’s economy piece by piece.
Orengo pointed to Muhoroni, Miwani and Sony Sugar, claiming that ownership and registration arrangements surrounding the troubled sugar sector raise serious concerns about who ultimately benefits from these strategic assets.
His remarks, if they resonate with residents, could complicate Ruto’s efforts to strengthen his political presence in Nyanza.
The former governor also rejected what he portrayed as attempts to dictate who Nyanza should engage with politically.
Instead, he called for broader cooperation across communities, arguing that Kenyans should unite around the rule of law, a free press and greater economic fairness.
His message comes at a politically sensitive moment, with national leaders already positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Nyanza remains an important political battleground, and any sustained backlash against the administration could have significant implications.
Orengo made the remarks while attending the burial of Mama Rose Olulo Onduto, the stepmother of his aide Oscar Aluru.
