Kindiki Cracks the Whip on Contractors Over Slow Highway Progress

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki during an impromptu inspection at various sections of the Rironi–Mau Summit Highway which is under construction, has called for accelerated works, strict quality adherence and improved coordination among contractors to ensure timely delivery of the key transport corridor.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki made the unannounced visit on Wednesday morning, moving through multiple construction points along the Rironi–Mau Summit Highway, a strategic artery connecting Nairobi to the Rift Valley and western regions.
During the inspection, the Deputy President engaged engineers, contractors and officials from the relevant infrastructure agencies, seeking updates on progress, challenges, and expected completion timelines.
He emphasized that the government is keen on ensuring that major infrastructure projects are not only completed within schedule but also meet required safety and durability standards.
Kindiki noted that delays in road construction have a direct impact on economic activity, particularly in transport, agriculture, and tourism sectors that rely heavily on efficient road networks.
He urged contractors to increase workforce deployment, improve night-shift operations where feasible, and ensure that materials used meet the approved specifications.
He also highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in public infrastructure projects, warning against negligence, cost inflation, or substandard workmanship.

According to him, taxpayers expect value for money, and any lapses in execution would not be tolerated.
Residents and road users along the corridor welcomed the inspection, saying it reflects renewed government attention to long-standing traffic bottlenecks that have affected travel times between Nairobi and upcountry towns.
Some traders expressed optimism that once completed, the highway will ease transport costs and boost regional trade.
The Deputy President further directed relevant authorities to maintain continuous supervision of all active sections of the project and to submit weekly progress reports to ensure any emerging issues are addressed promptly.
The Rironi–Mau Summit Highway upgrade is part of the broader national infrastructure agenda aimed at modernizing key transport corridors to support economic transformation.
Once completed, the project is expected to significantly reduce congestion, improve road safety, and enhance connectivity across multiple counties.
Kindiki reiterated that the administration remains committed to infrastructure-led development, noting that efficient road networks are central to achieving long-term economic competitiveness and regional integration.
