Is Captain Jack Sparrow preparing to set sail once again?

Nearly a decade after Disney distanced itself from Johnny Depp during his highly public legal battles, franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that active discussions are underway to bring the actor back for Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

Speaking at the D23 Expo, Bruckheimer revealed that the production team is actively shaping a new screenplay with Depp in mind, stating, “We’re talking with Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done”.

The revelation has sent shockwaves through the fan base, reigniting debate over whether the 61-year-old actor will actually put on the iconic tricorn hat again.

Disney originally cut ties with Depp prior to his 2022 defamation trial, during which the actor famously testified that he would not return to the studio even for “$300 million and a million alpacas.” However, time and a changing media landscape appear to have softened stances on both sides.

Industry insiders suggest that if a deal is finalized, Depp’s return might look different than before. Rather than carrying the entire film as the primary lead, reports indicate Jack Sparrow could step into a supporting capacity to help transition the franchise toward new characters, including a long-rumored project starring Margot Robbie.

The prospect of Depp’s comeback has also captured the attention of bettors. According to prediction market platform Kalshi, probability pricing currently reflects a 62% chance that Depp officially reprises his role in the next installment.

While no formal contract has been signed yet, Bruckheimer’s confirmation proves that the door to the Black Pearl is no longer locked. For fans who thought they had seen the last of the legendary pirate, the tide may finally be turning.
