Speaking during a public event, Orengo described Maraga as a good man with integrity and strong moral standing, adding that the retired Chief Justice possesses the qualities needed to lead the country.

The remarks have sparked widespread political conversations at a time when the country is witnessing intense realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Orengo, known for his outspoken political positions and legal activism, praised Maraga’s record while serving as Chief Justice, particularly his role in upholding constitutionalism and judicial independence.

He said Kenya needs leaders who can defend institutions and restore public trust in governance.

Maraga gained national and international recognition in 2017 after leading the Supreme Court bench that nullified the presidential election results  a historic ruling that made Kenya the first country in Africa to overturn a presidential election through the courts.

Supporters have often portrayed him as a symbol of courage and integrity within public service.

Although Maraga has not officially declared any presidential ambitions, political observers say recent public endorsements from senior leaders could signal growing pressure for him to enter active politics.

His name has increasingly appeared in discussions involving possible reformist or technocratic leadership options ahead of the next election cycle.

Orengo’s remarks are also likely to fuel speculation about shifting alliances within opposition politics.

The Siaya governor has recently positioned himself as a defender of constitutional governance and accountability, frequently criticizing what he describes as weakening democratic institutions.

Political analysts argue that Maraga’s image as a non-corrupt and disciplined public servant could appeal to voters frustrated by traditional political rivalries and endless coalition wrangles.

However, others point out that transitioning from the judiciary to elective politics would expose him to the harsh realities of Kenya’s competitive political environment.

The comments come amid growing public debate over the type of leadership Kenya needs as economic pressures, unemployment, and governance concerns continue to dominate national discourse.

While supporters of Maraga welcomed Orengo’s endorsement online, critics questioned whether judicial neutrality should easily translate into political leadership.

Even so, the discussion has placed the former Chief Justice firmly back into the national political spotlight.

Whether Maraga chooses to pursue the presidency or remain outside partisan politics, Orengo’s statement has already added a new dimension to Kenya’s evolving political conversation.
