Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and First Son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, is facing intense local and international backlash after launching a ruthless military crackdown on independent media houses, placing the country’s democratic future on a knife-edge.
In a dramatic sequence of events starting shortly after midnight on Sunday, heavily armed soldiers acting on Muhoozi’s orders swarmed the Namuwongo headquarters of the Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda. In an unprecedented physical siege, military personnel locked down the premises of NTV Uganda, Spark TV, and the Daily Monitor, trapping late-night workers inside and barring daylight staff from entering. By 5:00 AM, NTV and Spark TV were forced completely off the air, leaving viewers with blank screens reading “video unavailable.”
Taking to social media platform X to claim responsibility, Muhoozi bluntly asserted his autocratic control, writing: “In Uganda, I DO NOT believe in a free press! The press should be guided by cadres of the revolution.” He added that the media houses were closed “for good” and would not reopen without his express permission.
The flagrant weaponization of the state against political adversaries and journalists has sparked immediate outrage. Political analysts and civil society groups have warned the 52-year-old general that he must tread carefully in his aggressive suppression of dissent. Critics remind the First Son that Uganda is historically a nation of freedom fighters who have previously taken up arms against oppressive regimes.
“Something is lying to him that he has Uganda in his pocket, just because Ugandans decided to lie low for the sake of peace after years of political turmoil,” warned a local political commentator. “If Ugandans kicked out the ruthless Idi Amin and ousted Milton Obote twice, who is Muhoozi Kainerugaba? With time, atajua hajui (he will realize he knows nothing).”
