National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi led Parliament in a solemn moment of reflection on Thursday as he paid tribute to the late Raila Odinga while presenting the 2026/2027 national budget.
In an emotional address before unveiling the government’s KSh 4.8 trillion spending plan, Mbadi acknowledged Raila’s enduring contribution to Kenya’s political and economic development, describing him as a patriot, national hero and champion of justice.
“This is the first budget since the passing of the late Raila Odinga, who is fondly remembered as a patriot and national hero and who championed economic justice, democracy, and equal opportunity for all Kenyans,” Mbadi told lawmakers.
The Treasury CS noted that Raila’s influence transcended politics, saying his decades long struggle for democratic reforms, social justice, and inclusive economic growth had left a lasting mark on the nation.
“In honour of his immense contribution to our country, I would politely request and invite members of this House to observe a moment of silence,” Mbadi said.
Members of Parliament rose from their seats as silence descended on the chamber, creating one of the most poignant moments of the budget session.
