National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, after revealing that they met just hours before the fatal road accident that claimed Jirongo’s life.

Speaking during during Jirongos burial, Wetang’ula described Jirongo as a close friend of over three decades, recounting how the two sat together at a Nairobi hotel on the evening of December 12, 2025, before parting ways around 9:30 pm.

He said at the time nothing seemed a miss, and he was shocked the next morning to learn that Jirongo had died in a road crash near Karai, Naivasha.

Jirongo’s death has sparked intense public interest and speculation, with political leaders, family members and observers demanding clarity on his final movements and plans. Opposition figures have called on authorities to leave no stone unturned and urged Wetang’ula and others who saw Jirongo that night to provide detailed accounts of their interactions.

The family and burial committee have supported calls for a thorough probe, noting puzzling aspects about how Jirongo, who was expected in Nairobi, ended up in Naivasha in the early hours of December 13. They say questions remain about why he left Karen late at night, who he was with after meeting the Speaker, and what prompted his unexpected travel.

Police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have confirmed ongoing inquiries, with forensic teams already reviewing evidence from the accident scene. Authorities say they aim to address public concerns and determine the exact circumstances that led to the tragic collision.

Amid the calls for answers, Wetang’ula has also appealed to leaders and the public not to politicise the tragedy, stressing respect for the bereaved family during this difficult period.
