Wambua said leaders within the United Opposition had agreed to back Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka for the presidency, arguing that the time for private discussions was giving way to the need for a nationwide campaign.
His remarks come as opposition leaders continue holding consultations over how to unite behind a single presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.
Different figures, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, Edwin Sifuna, Fred Matiang’i, Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa, have featured in discussions around the opposition’s eventual ticket.
Wambua has repeatedly positioned Kalonzo as the candidate he believes should lead the opposition. On September 7, he urged residents in Kitui to support Kalonzo’s presidential bid, saying the Wiper leader enjoys substantial support across the country.
The senator’s latest statement is significant because previous reports have suggested that opposition principals were still working toward consensus. In July, Wambua claimed that opposition leaders had agreed on Kalonzo’s candidature, although other leaders continued with consultations.
Kalonzo himself has maintained that the opposition must remain united, while publicly engaging figures from different opposition formations. In July, he hosted Sifuna and other Linda Mwananchi leaders and reaffirmed the need for opposition unity.
Wambua’s declaration therefore adds pressure to an already active nomination debate. Whether the other opposition principals will publicly endorse Kalonzo remains a separate question, but his latest remarks have placed the issue firmly back at the centre of the 2027 political conversation.
