The high-profile event held at the United Nations headquarters in Gigiri, Nairobi, brought together senior government officials, diplomats, UN representatives, and regional leaders who described the project as a strong signal of Kenya’s growing influence in international affairs.

Speaking during the ceremony, President Ruto said the expansion of the UN complex reaffirmed Kenya’s position as a trusted global partner and the diplomatic hub of Africa.

He noted that Nairobi remains the only city in the developing world hosting a major UN headquarters, making the investment significant not only for Kenya but for the African continent.

Ruto praised the long-standing partnership between Kenya and the United Nations, saying the country remains committed to supporting multilateral cooperation, peace-building efforts, climate action and sustainable development goals.

“This expansion reflects confidence in Kenya’s stability, strategic position, and ability to host global institutions,” Ruto said. “We are proud that Nairobi continues to serve as a centre for diplomacy, innovation and international cooperation.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres commended Kenya for its continued support of UN operations and humanitarian efforts across the region.

He emphasized the importance of strengthening international institutions at a time when the world faces rising conflicts, climate emergencies and economic uncertainty.

Guterres said the new office block and planned Assembly Hall expansion would improve the UN’s operational capacity in Africa and create a more modern and sustainable working environment for staff and delegates.

The newly inaugurated office block is expected to accommodate hundreds of UN personnel and enhance coordination among various UN agencies operating from Nairobi.

Officials said the project incorporates environmentally friendly technologies, energy-efficient systems, and modern conference facilities designed to meet growing global demands.

The groundbreaking for the Assembly Hall expansion marks another milestone for the Gigiri complex, which has increasingly become a central venue for international summits and high-level discussions on climate change, sustainable development, and regional security.

Leaders attending the event said the project would also create jobs and stimulate economic activity in Nairobi through construction, hospitality and related services.

Kenya has in recent years intensified efforts to position Nairobi as a leading global conference and diplomatic destination, hosting major international meetings and attracting multinational organizations.

The event concluded with Ruto and Guterres unveiling a commemorative plaque before touring the newly opened UN office block.
