British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a criminal trial at Southwark Crown Court in London.
The 51-year-old entertainer was convicted on Wednesday, November 4, after a jury deliberated for three days. However, Brand was acquitted of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Following the verdict, Judge Justice Bennathan ordered Brand to remain in custody, warning that he would face a significant prison sentence.
“You’ve been convicted of a number of offenses including rape. The consequence of that is inevitably a significant custodial term,” the judge reportedly told him.
Brand is expected to return to court on Monday for sentencing.
According to reports, the guilty rape conviction relates to an alleged incident in 2009 involving a woman who accused him of engaging in sexual activity without her consent after removing a condom during intercourse.
The complainant told the court that she repeatedly asked Brand to stop but he refused, leaving her experiencing pain and bleeding.
The trial involved seven criminal charges stemming from allegations made by six women concerning incidents between 1999 and 2009.
Brand had denied all the accusations and pleaded not guilty to every charge.
The comedian previously addressed the allegations publicly in an Instagram video, admitting that he had been foolish during his younger years but firmly denying engaging in non-consensual sexual activity.
Meanwhile, Britain’s Metropolitan Police are investigating additional rape allegations involving two other women. Prosecutors have received investigation files as detectives continue examining the complaints.
Brand’s wife, Laura, attended court during the proceedings and was reportedly emotional following the verdict.
The conviction marks a major development in the downfall of the former Hollywood star, who previously enjoyed considerable success in comedy, television and film.
