President William Ruto has reaffirmed the national government’s commitment to completing the long-awaited Bukhungu Stadium renovation. He has pledged that the multi-million shilling project will be finished by December this year.

The assurance came when the Head of State attended the finals of the Governor Fernandes Barasa Cup. This event took place at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County on Thursday, January 1, 2026.

President Ruto addressed thousands of football fans, county leaders and local residents. They had gathered under cloudy skies for the regional football showcase.

He announced that the government has committed Sh1.4 billion to fast-track the stadium’s completion. The plan is to transform it into a modern 25,000-seat facility. It will be the largest in Western Kenya.

Today, we have come together not just to enjoy football. We are here to reaffirm our commitment to infrastructure that uplifts youth and community spirit,” President Ruto said. “By the end of this year, Bukhungu Stadium will be completed and upgraded with a proper canopy.”

The President’s comments signal renewed energy behind the project that has seen delays in recent years.

County leaders and national officials believe that finishing Bukhungu Stadium will boost sports development in the region. It will also help position Kakamega as a key host for major sporting events. This is in preparation for Kenya’s role as co-host of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

President Ruto also addressed broader development goals. He urged leaders and citizens to focus on tangible progress. They should avoid empty political rhetoric.

He applauded the region’s passionate support for grassroots sports. He then challenged opposition politicians to present clear development agendas. He urged them not to engage in uninformed debate.

Governor Fernandes Barasa thanked the President for the financial commitment. He reiterated Kakamega County’s determination to partner with the national government. Their goal is to deliver key infrastructure projects.

“Our people deserve facilities that match their talent and enthusiasm,” the governor said. “This stadium will be a beacon of that promise.”

The Governor Barasa Cup final is a highlight on the Kakamega sporting calendar. It provided a fitting backdrop for the announcement. This event underscores both the unity and competitive spirit that local football brings to Western Kenya.

With the President’s promise now public, work on Bukhungu Stadium is expected to accelerate significantly. Both county and national teams are pushing to meet the December deadline.
