Nairobi, Kenya – Ruaraka Member of Parliament TJ Kajwang was reportedly forced to flee a gathering in Nairobi after a group of angry youths disrupted his address and attacked his vehicle.
A video circulating online appears to show the youths, who had turned up to listen to the legislator, growing agitated after he allegedly claimed that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna would not defeat President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Kajwang also reportedly argued that the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga left the party in the broad-based arrangement, and that members should therefore remain committed to it.
According to the footage, the remarks did not go down well with the crowd. His speech was cut short as youths began pelting his car with stones and crude weapons. They reportedly demanded that he respect Sifuna, whom many of them regard as their political leader.
The Ruaraka MP is seen leaving the scene hurriedly as tension escalates.
The incident comes as political temperatures rise ahead of 2027, with growing debate over Sifuna’s political ambitions and ODM’s future direction after Odinga’s death. The broad-based arrangement with President Ruto’s government has drawn both support and criticism within the party and among supporters.
The video has sparked intense debate on social media. Some Kenyans condemned the violence and called for political tolerance, while others said the reaction showed deep frustration among the youth over the party’s direction.
Neither Kajwang nor Sifuna had publicly commented on the incident at the time of writing. Police have also not issued a statement on whether investigations have been launched.
